Alfred University students showcase artificial intelligence innovations for energy and industry

Alfred University engineering students recently unveiled their senior capstone projects, demonstrating cutting-edge applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in energy and industrial sectors.

The projects stemmed from a recent AI course offered through a collaboration between Alfred University, NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority), and EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute).

Four projects that tackled real-world challenges include:

  • Wind Turbine Blade Inspection: A team of students developed an AI-driven system to detect flaws in wind turbine blades. By automating the identification of cracks or material weaknesses, this innovation promises to enhance safety and reduce downtime for wind energy operators.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Compliance: Another group created a system capable of analyzing images to determine if workers are wearing the correct PPE. This technology could help companies improve workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Mine Tailings Sorting: A third team designed an algorithm to sort mine tailings, turning waste materials from mining operations into valuable resources and supporting sustainable practices.
  • Rust Detection in Power Line Towers Using Image Detection: Another group used AI to assist in detecting rust formed on power line towers and to differentiate rusted towers from non-rusted towers.

These projects illustrate the transformative potential of AI for solving complex problems in energy production, workplace safety, and environmental sustainability. By combining AI with engineering expertise, students are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

“Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool for improving efficiency, safety, and sustainability across industries,” said John Simmins, director of the GE Vernova Advanced Power Grid Laboratory at Alfred University “These projects showcase the creativity and technical skill of Alfred University students, as well as the benefits of collaborative learning supported by NYSERDA and EPRI.”

Alfred University remains at the forefront of preparing students for the future, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to drive innovation and address critical challenges in a rapidly evolving world.
